Destination Uses Pinterest to Boost Web Traffic

The latest social networking channel to capture the attention of the group travel market is Pinterest–an online pinboard that organizes a collection of categories including recipes, inspirational quotes, decorating tips, and recently, destinations. Lake Erie Shores & Islands tapped into this world of shared interests and is tracking page views and luring tourists by keeping pace with social networking trends.

"I feel it is my responsibility to stay up-to-date on the latest social media platforms," said Lake Erie Shores & Islands Social Media Specialist Abby Miller. "Pinterest has been around for almost two years, but has experienced a dramatic rise in interest over the past several months."

Miller noticed other destinations were jumping on the Pinterest bandwagon, and she thought Lake Erie Shores consumers would benefit from a presence on that particular website.

"We are relatively new to using Pinterest so we can’t provide concrete evidence that this is driving more traffic to our website, however, it is a cost effective, low maintenance way to potentially reach consumers and increase the awareness of our destination," Miller said.

By putting the destination on Pinterest, Lake Erie Shores can highlight various activities, accommodations, and attractions in the region. These categories are referred to as “boards,” and some of the topics include "Island Getaways," "Cedar Point," "Indoor Waterpark Fun," and "Meetings & Groups."

Within each board are a number of Sandusky, Ohio attractions. These items are “pinned,” and other Pinterest users can pin them as well. Following user pinning, the destination will show up on individual pages.
