When it comes to transportation and business issues, Jefferson Lines President and CEO Charlie Zelle, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, is one of the country’s most knowledgeable and respected leaders.

Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton cited Zelle’s extensive business experience as one of the many reasons he selected Zelle to be the state’s new commissioner of the Department of Transportation, beginning January 15. Zelle is the state’s nineteenth commissioner of transportation since the agency was established in 1919 as the Minnesota Highway Department. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is one of the largest agencies in state government, with a $2.6 billion budget and 5,000 employees.

MnDOT is responsible for highway construction, road maintenance, and snow removal on more than twelve thousand miles of roads. The agency also has responsibility and works with local officials to manage 136 airports; maintains and inspects more than twenty thousand bridges; and oversees 4,400 miles of railroad lines.

Zelle, well-known in his home state of Minnesota since joining Jefferson Lines in 1986, leads the company that was founded by his grandfather in 1919. Jefferson Lines has been involved in ABA since the association was founded in 1926. Zelle has served in numerous leadership roles within ABA during his twenty-two years on the association’s board of directors, including chairman from 2001 through 2005. Jefferson Lines, with headquarters in Minneapolis now serves customers in thirteen states from as far west as Montana, east to Wisconsin, and as far south as Texas. In Minnesota, Jefferson Lines serves sixty communities with daily scheduled motorcoach services.

“In his more than a quarter century of leadership at Jefferson Lines, Charlie Zelle has proven himself to be one of the real leaders and innovators in the transportation and motorcoach industry,” said Peter Pantuso, ABA president and CEO. “His extraordinary leadership at Jefferson Lines and within ABA shows how clearly he understands the challenges we face in the transportation field to serve the public, making sure they get to their destinations safely, efficiently, reliably, and at a fair price. Governor Dayton has made a great selection. We will miss his wise counsel on the board of directors, and we at ABA wish to thank him for his many years of superb service to the association and its members.”
