The Government is Back in Black

Ok, not really. The government is still in the red, but it is done with the shutdown...for now. For the last sixteen days, government workers were sent home, some worked without pay, national parks and monuments closed, states worked to reopen them, tour operators scrambled, and tourists became frustrated. But now that the government shutdown is over…at least for a little while longer, what will that mean for the tourism industry?

The Government Shutdown ... Now What?

The tourism industry has been hit hard by the continuing government shutdown. Despite the fact that many national monuments and parks have been closed due to what is happening in the nation's capitol, there are still many places for your groups to go. Although we do not know how long the government shutdown will last, we want to provide you with updates and suggestions on places you could send them instead.

Tourism Cares announced the successful completion of a large-scale rejuvenation of Plimoth Plantation, the Smithsonian Institution Affiliate that annually attracts more than 350,000 guests. On Friday, September 27, World Tourism Day, more than two hundred seventy-five volunteers from twenty-one states and 113 companies donated $160,000 of labor in advance of 2020, the highly anticipated 400th anniversary of the pilgrims' transatlantic voyage to Plymouth, Massachusetts.
